NEW MUSIC… TO ME, AT LEAST

One of the things that excites me most in this whole world is music. I have absolutely no musical talent whatsoever, couldn’t hold a tune if you held a gun to my head, and can’t dance to save my life, but I *love* music. I love all kinds of music.. except, basically, country. But even some country songs I can jam to! Music is just the most inspiring thing in the world. I love a good beat, I love amazing lyrics, and I love that connection you can feel to a song where it somehow just GETS what you’re going through, what you’re feeling, or who you are that day.

Admittedly I don’t have the firmest grasp on new music because I don’t listen to the radio so a lot of times I’m behind the curve on what’s out there. I have Sirius XM satellite radio in my car, but end up listening to my iPod most of the time (I’m a fan of a well-executed playlist, I fancy myself quite the amateur DJ I guess) so I stick to what’s already in my library, which is great, but I end up missing out on some really good stuff.

I watched the VMAs on Sunday night, and while the overall show was pretty much a trainwreck (MTV doesn’t even try for quality anymore at this point, they just go for what will get them the most tweets) I found myself pleasantly surprised by some of the performances. I thought Justin Bieber did a great job (sans the crying, sorry Biebs) and really love both of his new songs. I also love “Cool for the Summer” but didn’t totally love Demi’s performance (it was a little too try-hard on the sexiness and came across kind of lame, sorry Demi!). I’m also obsessed with The Weeknd — what a phenom voice he has. I loved Nick Jonas at the pre-show too (that grinding sesh with Kelly Osbourne.. I mean, wow. Lick.)

The best performance of the night, to me, was by newcomer Tori Kelly. Aside from her totally enviable hair (THOSE CURLS. How does one achieve such hair perfection?!) and gorgeous makeup, her performance was the bomb diggity. Girl can SANG. I’ve always believed that true talent shines even without all the theatrics of the stage — backup dancers, crazy costumes, strobe lights and confetti. And this girl is a true talent.

Her voice is flawless. And what the fuck is sexier on earth than a girl with a guitar and a breakup song? Nothing. Sparkly pants help too.

If you haven’t seen this performance, you really need to watch it. This is the talent that MTV needs to return to highlighting (and she’s only 22!). Twitter wars, catty pop star fights, and worshipping t&a and sex tape stars — no. This girl is the real deal. I wish for her lots of success and already bought her music on iTunes. I’ll proudly blast it on my next well-selected iPod playlist 😉

NEW MUSIC… TO ME, AT LEAST

LADIES I LOVE: DEMI LOVATO

So I know I wrote about Demi’s sexy summer anthem “Cool For The Summer” (which I’m still lovin’ by the way) awhile back, but in honor of our girl’s 23rd birthday I figured I’d post a little Ladies I Love action for her. She’s hands-down one of my favorites of the current crop of young Hollywood stars. She’s super talented, which I think gets forgotten about in the midst of the personal drama and struggles she endured in the past. Her voice is amazing and incredibly versatile. She sounds just as good belting out a huge ballad (“Let It Go” anyone?) as she does rocking out in a poppy headbanger. I’ve never felt her music career has gotten the attention and adoration it deserves (but I’m hoping it does as she has new music coming out soon!) and her Demi album is one of my all-time favorites.

She definitely has an edge but also seems way mature beyond her years. She’s experienced her fair share of struggles with substance abuse and mental illness and the great thing is, she’s opened up about them to let other people know they’re not alone. She’s helping end the stigma behind treatment for addiction and mental health crises.

Aside from all of that, though, the girl just seems like a ton of fun. She’d be my dream SoulCycle buddy. She has a great laugh and you can tell she has a good time no matter what she’s doing. She also loves animals and is hopefully doing okay following the untimely death of her puppy, Buddy. And she’s in a relationship that makes her extremely happy, so she has such a radiant glow about her. This is definitely Demi’s moment, and I hope that her career continues on such a high trajectory — she’s got the pipes and the determination to go as far as she wants. Happy birthday, Demi!

HOT TIPS

I tend to be somewhat of a hair chameleon — I simply can’t help myself. I have the same style for a year, two at max, and then the urge comes over me to change it up. I’ve had a bob (and loved it), super long locks, and something in-between. I’ve done bangs, no bangs, layers, no layers. I’ve been every shade under the natural born sun, from dark brown (almost black), to light brown, to honey highlights, to red, to super blonde. I love the feeling of going into the salon and coming out feeling like a different lady.

Thankfully, I haven’t had too many traumatic experiences, save for one bad haircut in my younger years (this is when the Farrah-flipped ends came back in style a la Mandy Moore below, and it was NOT a good look for me), so I feel lucky and that makes me happy to experiment.

One thing I’ve never worked up the courage to try is dip-dyed ends. But I’ve ALWAYS wanted to, especially the last few years as they’ve come back in style. I currently am rocking a medium-length blonde coif, so I think pink tips would look killer. But I also tend to err on the conservative side with my overall look (I feel like all eyes are on me when I wear heels, for crying out loud), so I’m not sure I could pull it off without people thinking I had some sort of nervous breakdown.

But I love this look — it is so fun and vibrant and so much more fun than a boring trim. Here are some of my favorite looks. What do you think about this trend?

DEMI LOVATO ACTUALLY ISN’T COOL FOR THE SUMMER

Why you ask? Because she’s smoking HOT in her latest video for “Cool for the Summer.” (Sorry, bad pun, but it’s so true!)

Demi has been killin’ it in the gym for awhile now, posting sexy selfies in all kinds of flexible poses and cute gym wear, and it shows in her video, released today. The 22-year-old has tons of fun in the video, which includes a sexy pillow fight and foam party. Where was our invite, girl?

The song and corresponding video definitely show a more mature side, which Demi told Ryan Seacrest is a deliberate change to show the more fun, badass side of herself. Demi says:

“There’s nobody in the pop industry that says, ‘Don’t f**k with me,’” she explains. “There’s Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. Those two women, they’re like, ‘I’ll kick your f**king a**.’ And that’s the thing. I’m totally that, but in pop music. Not that they’re not pop music, but it’s just kind of a different world.”

“There’s a side of [me] that people don’t get to see with my past music, but it’s been there,” she adds. “It’s totally been there. And like hey, just because I’m sober doesn’t mean that I’m judging anybody else for their stuff. And also, it also doesn’t mean I didn’t have a damn good time back then either. I’m having a good time sober — a better time for sure.”

Enjoy the video for my favorite sultry song of the summer.
