Today is the 23rd birthday of Karlie Kloss — supermodel, super baker, super athlete, super EVERYTHING. I have to say, I’m honestly SHOCKED that she’s only 23! Karlie has always seemed so wise beyond her years.
It’s safe to say she is wise beyond her years, having traveled the world modeling since the ripe old age of 14 (!!) for huge fashion houses and campaigns. Sure, she’s walked the Victoria’s Secret runway and appeared on countless magazine covers, but here are some of the lesser-known reasons why she’s so fabulous:
1. She’s classically trained in ballet.
2. She’s obsessed with fitness for more than just looking great in photos. She told Style.com:
I try to work out consistently four to five days every week. I’m constantly on the move with travel and work, so my routine tends to vary from week to week. I think the most important part of working out and living a healthy lifestyle is incorporating movement naturally into your everyday life—walking around the city, taking your bike to the store, or using the stairs instead of the escalator.
3. She bakes cookies for charity.
Her famously delicious and health-conscious cookies (aptly called Karlie’s Kookies) have provided half-a-million nutritious meals to those in need around the world.
4. She knows how to code.
Karlie tagged along when her boyfriend, investor Joshua Kushner, took coding classes. She tells SELF Magazine: “The irony is that I was the one it really clicked for. I mean, it’s like a superpower. It’s just a thing I’m personally excited by,” she says, “starting this conversation, and engaging girls who wouldn’t normally be introduced to it.” She teamed up with The Flatiron School in New York City to offer high school girls scholarships to the school’s summer coding program. Over 600 girls entered, and 21 ultimately won. “I’m definitely still a beginner,” she says. “But it’s something that I hope to get better at. I hope we’ll be able to change at least one girl’s choice of what she studies, or maybe even just the way she thinks about building her own idea into a company. That’s how I measure success.”
5. She has her own YouTube channel.
This month, Karlie launched Klossy— her very own YouTube channel. She explains that Klossy will be a place for her to give her fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her world, from all of her adventures, to see the parts of her we don’t get to see every day. So COOL!
Karlie’s next venture will be a bit more studious: she’s planning on attending NYU (my alma mater!) in the fall at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. How cool would it be to pass notes in class with a supermodel? NYUers, if you see Karlie in Washington Square Park, be sure to say hi for me!
